Jeep expedition “Around Baikal”

Jeep-expedition “Around Baikal” will take place in Barguzin valley, which formerly had the mysterious name “Bargudjin-Tokum.” The participants of the expedition  will take part in an incredible adventure around the most sacred places of Pribaikalie (the region to the West of Lake Baikal), visit the picturesque Holy Nose peninsula and other unique natural monuments, holy places and ancient monasteries, have a hot bath in thermal springs, and enjoy the tender Siberian sun.

Symbolic aim of the expedition is to circle the Pearle of the Eastern Siberia the lake Baikal in the first days of the coming year

Day 1

Arrive in Irkutsk. Travel by picturesque road along coast of Lake Baikal to the city of Sludyanka, the mineralogical pearl of Pribaikalie. Excursion to private museum “Semi-Precious Stones of Baikal”, containing real treasures of Siberia. After lunch in a comfortable café, travel to the capital of the Buryat Republic, Ulan-Ude. Excursion around the city, including a visit to the Ethnographical Museum of Transbaikal Peoples. Traditional Buryat lunch is in real felt ger (yurt). Visit the major Buddhist temple of Russia, which is an outstanding example of traditional religious architecture. The body of Hamo Lama Etigilov, which has not yet begun to decay since his death, is kept on display here.

Day 2

Cross through the mountain pass “Pithi Gora” by twisted and picturesque road. Visit the village of Baturino, famous for the only Women’s Monastery in Buryatia, which is located here. Travel to the village of Ust-Barguzin through a sparsely populated part of taiga, where you can catch glimpses of Lake Baikal through the trees. Cross the Barguzin river by ice ferry into the territory of the Zabaikalsk National Park. Travel to  the only large peninsula on Baikal, Holy Nose, across the narrow, sandy Chivirkyisk isthmus. Travel to the village of Barguzin.

Day 3

Travel to the resort Alla, which is situated in a rocky canyon, the valley of which extends into the Barguzin Mountain range and is the source of ten different mineral springs. Walk around the canyon. Travel along the Barguzin Valley, visiting the most traditional Buryat villages Kurumkan and Ulunhan, which provide a vivid introduction to the traditional homes and culture of the local population.
Sightseeing in the Barguzin Valley: unusual rocks of Suvinsk Saxsons castle, situated at the foot of Ikatsk range; natural landscape monument Ininsk rock garden; and the holy valley of the sacred stone Buhe-Shulun, the spirit of which is its master. Travel to Barguzin.
Visit Kurumkansk Datsan, which is the Russian centre of meditation. Visit recreational spa Kucheger, whose thermal water is famous far beyond the borders of Buryatia for its curing effect. Accommodation is in mystifying taiga in Umhey, also famous for its curing radon springs. Sauna.

Days 4, 5

The most extreme part of the expedition is begun from Umhey. It is necessary to overpass through the taiga on the channels, forest roads and glades. The length of this part is about 300 km. There are fords through Barguzin river, Namana river, Svetlaya river and Sramnaya river. The thickness of snow is about 1,5 meter. Can be about 50 degrees of frost. The road goes on the territory of the Barguzin biosphere reserve where there is the possibility to see the wild animals on the natural conditions.
Possibly, the Spirits of Barguzin Valley don’t favour to us and don’t allow to realize our plans. In this case we have to recede.

Day 6

Arrival in a taiga village of Kumora. Travel to the village of New Uoyan, that is the station of Baikalo-Amursk Railway (BAR). On road visit to hot springs. Picturesque road circles the northern half (extremity) of Baikal and conducts to the young city Severobaikalsk. The city was found in 1974 and closely connected with the BAR.

Day 7

Travel to the village of Magistralniy, from where the final part of expedition is begun. That is the “Zimnik” (road existent only in winter time) to the village of Kachug. In the Kachug area it’s possible to visit the Chichkinskie pisanizhi, the famous all over the world rock paintings (drawings), that are situated on the Lena river.

Day 8

Travel to the village of Bayanday, return to Irkutsk. Festive dinner celebrating the culmination of the expedition.

The company “Asia-expedition" has a right to make slight changes in the itinerary of the expedition. The starting and ending points of the expedition may be customized to participants’ preferences out of the following cities: Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude.  The itinerary of the expedition may be extended due to the choice of optional fee-paid services as visits to ancient monasteries, to the Church of Blagoveshenie (Baikalo-Kudara), to Bogorodsko-Kazanskaya Church (Tvorogovo), additional excursions on the water, and fishing.
