Jeep-expedition "Faces of Baikal"

Silence of solitary bays of Maloye Sea and shining sun of sand beaches of Holy Nose, the indescribable beauty of Olkhon Island and the Valley of Sleeping Spirits in Tazheransk steppe, hidden forestry lakes and birds’ markets noise, a great number of healthy springs and the beauty of Siberian mountains – this is many-sided Baikal, – the most ancient and mysterious lake on the planet.

Day 1

Arrive in Irkutsk. Travel to the bay Maloye Sea. En route visit sacred ceremonial places in the Valley of Sleeping Spirits and participate in a shamanistic ceremony. View mountain pictures of Hara Nur Mountain and the archeological monument “Kurykanskaya Wall”. Climb to the summit Tanhan in the Tazheransk steppe. Accommodation is in tourist base “Winds of Travel”.

Day 2

Ferry across to the most famous island of Lake Baikal, Olkhon. Excursion around the village of Huzhir. Visit the museum of local lore, history and economy, where a great collection of ancient objects reflecting the life and culture of inhabitants is on display. Walk around the coast of Lake Baikal to the creek “Shamanka” – one of the holy places of Asia. Swim in the warm water of Saraysk Bay. Accommodation is in a comfortable cottage with hot banya (Russian sauna).

Day 3

Jeep excursion to the north end of Olkhon – Hoboy Creek, to view the picturesque panorama of Baikal and the islands of Maloye Sea. En route visit rocky Sagan–Hushun Creek and the picturesque river valley Uzura and also Peschannaya Bay, which is famous not only as a home of prison camps GULAG, but also for their “walking” trees and sand dunes. Trip to a unique salty lake.

Day 4

Return to Irkutsk. Excursion around the city of Irkutsk, the heart of Eastern Siberia. Visit the most interesting places and the museum of the history of the city cover the main events in the development of Irkutsk. Accommodation is in a hotel.

Day 5

Travel to the tourist base Kultushnaya, situated on the shore of the most popular bay of Baikal, Posolsky Sor. Stop for lunch on an observation deck en route to the Kultuksk Summit, which towers above the blue water of Baikal. Excursion to the private museum “Semi-Precious Stones of Baikal” in Sludyanka. Accommodation is in comfortable cottages.

Day 6

Travel to the biggest bay of Baikal, Barguzinsky Bay. En route visit a unique monument of history, religion and architecture of Zabaikalie, Posolsky Spaso-Preobrazhansky Monastery. Also see the only women’s monastery on Baikal in Baturino. Stop for lunch on the shore of Baikal in Gremyachinsk. Accommodation is in a private hotel in Ust-Barguzin.

Day 7

Ferry across the river Barguzin and entrance to the territory of Zabaikalsk National Park. Travel to the biggest peninsula of Baikal, Holy Nose. Water excursion around one of the most picturesque places on Baikal and home to omul, Baikal salmon, pike and other fish. Fishing. Swim in the hot springs of Zmeinaya Creek. Banya. Accommodation is in tents on the shore of Lake Baikal.

Day 8

Water excursion to the archipelago Ushkanye Islands, home of the Baikal Nerpa, the only fresh-water seal in the world. Return to Barguzin bay. Fishing. Accommodation is in tents on the shore of Lake Baikal.

Day 9

Ascend to the plateau of Holy Nose (1877 m) to view the thrilling panorama of Baikal and lines of the Barguzin Mountains. Accommodation is in tents on the shore of Lake Baikal.

Day 10

Travel to picturesque Lake Kotokelskoye. En route take an excursion to the ecological park-museum “Bright Meadows” in Maksimiha and visit the resort Goryachinsk, famous for its curing springs and mud baths. Accommodation is in tents on a sandy beach in Gremyachinsk.

Day 11

Travel to Tunkinsk National Park, situated in the valley between magnificent Eastern Sayn and Hamar-Daban Mountains. Visit the resort Arshan, famous for its mineral springs. Accommodation is in the hotel Sagaan Dali.

Day 12

Excursion around Arshan with a visit to a Buddhist temple. Visit mineral springs at the resort. Walk through mountain canyon along the river Kingarga, famous for its cascading waterfalls and medicinal herbs that grow there. Ascend to the observation summit “Hill of Love”, which gives you an opportunity to view a wonderful valley, surrounded by high mountain ranges. Dinner, consisting of Buryat cuisine dishes. Banya.

Day 13

Travel to the valley of springs “Maliy Shumak” hidden in the taiga and swim in the hot springs “Pearls” on the shore of the Irkut River. Return to Irkutsk. Festive dinner, celebrating the culmination of the expedition.
